D'Agostino named Cowtown medical director

Darrin D'Agostino, DO, MPH, Chair of Internal Medicine at the UNT Health Science Center, has been named Medical Director for The Cowtown. The annual event, to be held February 22-24 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, is the largest multi-race running event in the state of Texas. Organizers expect to attract a record-breaking 30,000 runners over this year's race weekend.

D'Agostino received his DO degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and his MPH from the University of Connecticut. As Medical Director for The Cowtown, he will provide medical leadership and oversight to the team caring for runners both days on the course and in the finish line medical "tent," which includes a number of UNTHSC students volunteers from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and the School of Health Professions, which includes the Physician Assistant and Physical Therapy departments.

Founded 35 years ago as a marathon by the Health Science Center, the event has grown to include a kids' 5K, adult 5K, a 10K, half marathon, marathon and ultra marathon. UNTHSC remains a presenting sponsor and some 300-plus faculty, staff and students volunteer for the event each year.

The Cowtown raises funds for The C.A.L.F. (Children's Activities for Life and Fitness) Program, which promotes the importance of good physical fitness by working with local schools and community centers in teaching proper running, training and nutrition to area youth in preparation for participating in The Cowtown races, as well as a lifetime of fitness. The program awards grants to qualifying North Texas school children to assist their entry into the races, as well as free pairs of New Balance running shoes. This year some 2,100 local school children will benefit from C.A.L.F.
