The Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine now leads all other medical schools in the state of Texas for its percentage increase of student applicants.
Hear why - in the words of current and former students:
"From interactive class discussions to getting help from professors in the library before a big exam, I am thankful for the support I had throughout my studies." - Christian Dean (TCOM '12)
"Every single person on the UNT Health Science Center campus wants to see you succeed." - Heinz Schwarzkopf (TCOM '16)
"I wanted to train at the best osteopathic medical school in the country.... The systems-based curriculum helped me retain more information than I would have thought possible." - Emma Coleman (TCOM '15)
"Being a transfer student from another medical school, I can whole heartedly say that TCOM graduates are some of the most well-prepared and well-liked residents in the country." - Tyler Kloven (TCOM '13)
And that reputation is growing. "Our graduates are known for performing well as residents," said TCOM Dean Don Peska, DO, MEd.
TCOM's commitment to excellence is among the factors driving this year's record number of applicants, 2,730 -- 11 for every available position.
"That rate hasn't been seen since the Vietnam War era, when admission to medical school conferred a draft deferment," said Peska.
And during the past five years, TCOM's application rate has outpaced the state's - TCOM's rose 33 percent while the total number applying to Texas medical schools increased just 15 percent.
Plus, TCOM applications have increased each of the past 12 years, an accomplishment not matched by any other Texas medical school.
TCOM applications jumped substantially in 2001 when the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service added TCOM to the options on the common application. "Since then, our increases are reputational," Peska said.
TCOM's location in the nation's fourth-largest metropolitan area is an additional recruitment asset. Said Peska,"Fort Worth is a great place to live."
As student Emma Coleman puts it, "I initially chose TCOM for its track record of academic excellence; however, I came to realize that TCOM was so much more than great statistics. I continue to appreciate the cooperative and welcoming environment."
