UNT System Board of Regents Names Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun Interim President of UNT HSC in Fort Worth

Dr. Calhoun begins his leadership at HSC Feb. 1

On Jan. 20, the UNT System Board of Regents accepted Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams’s resignation by mutual agreement as president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth (HSC), effective Jan. 31, 2025.

The Board of Regents and the UNT System are grateful for Dr. Trent-Adams’ contributions and service to HSC. Both as President and previously as Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Dr. Trent-Adams served HSC and its students with dedication, integrity, and respect.

The UNT System Board of Regents also authorized the appointment of Kirk A. Calhoun, MD, FACP, as interim President of HSC, effective Feb. 1, 2025.

More about Kirk A. Calhoun, M.D., FACP

Dr. Calhoun served as President of The University of Texas at Tyler until his retirement in 2024. He remains on the faculty part-time as Professor of Medicine. Previously, he served as President of the UT Health Science Center at Tyler and was selected to lead the consolidated UT Tyler, which merged the general academic and health science center campuses in Tyler under his leadership in 2020. He is the former Board Chair of the UT Health East Texas Health System, composed of 10 hospitals, 50 clinics, an academic multi-specialty physician group practice, emergency transport services, and a home health agency. Before his leadership positions in East Texas, Dr. Calhoun served simultaneously as Senior Vice President at Parkland Memorial Hospital and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at UT Southwestern, in Dallas. Upon completion of his fellowship in Clinical Nephrology, Hypertension, and Metabolism at the University of Chicago, Dr. Calhoun began his career in the private practice of medicine.
