Texas Ranks #2 in the Nation for Food Insecurity

UNT Dallas Food Bank (1)With Texas having the second-highest rate of food insecurity in the nation and the need for nutritional assistance rising, UNT Dallas is committed to serving our community with free monthly food distributions.

The first mobile food pantry of the year will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025, in parking lot #2 of the main campus in southern Dallas from 9 a.m. to noon or until supplies run out. Vehicles typically line up well before 9 a.m. along University Hills Blvd. as volunteers prepare the products to be given away.

As always, the drive-through service is open to the public, the campus and any community members who need nutritional support. Participants will complete a simple intake form while remaining inside their cars. Volunteers will then load a box of food into each person’s trunk.

The monthly food giveaway started just before the pandemic in late 2019 and has continued each and every month since. It is part of the university's mission to strengthen communities and the UNT System value "We Care."

Last year, in partnership with the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), these monthly events distributed 566,306 pounds of food to 17,686 people.

UNT Dallas Food Bank (2)A recent report by the USDA said Texas ranks #2 of the 50 states in food insecurity at 16.9%, with nearly 5.1 million Texans at risk for hunger. According to the NTFB, one out of every six children in North Texas is food insecure.

Following the Jan. 17 distribution, 11 more are planned for the year on these dates:
