On June 13, 2015, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 11, which has been called “campus carry,” into law. Beginning Aug. 1, 2016, the law allows licensed holders to carry a concealed handgun on public university campuses, including the University of North Texas, University of North Texas Health Science Center, University of North Texas at Dallas and University of North Texas System Administration Building.
Senate Bill 11 provides that reasonable rules and regulations regarding the carrying of concealed handguns on campus may be implemented after consultation with faculty, staff and students. The UNT System Administration sought feedback from its employees regarding the specific safety considerations and the uniqueness of the System building prior to developing a policy. The proposed policy was approved by the Chancellor and UNT System Board of Regents.
