Senate Bill 17

In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 17 (Texas Education Code §51.3525), which bans diversity, equity and inclusion offices from public institutions of higher education and generally prohibits colleges and universities from engaging in programs, activities and certain trainings that traditionally may have been conducted by these offices.  Senate Bill (SB 17) does not supersede federal and state laws that protect individuals against unlawful discrimination, including harassment, and the legal obligation to treat individuals equally under the United States Constitution.

The UNT System Office of General Counsel has published Senate Bill 17 Guidance and Frequently Asked Questions and a memorandumthat provides general guidance to the System Enterprise regarding SB 17. The FAQ and memo are intended to provide broad guidance and may not answer every question or situation that arises. Specific legal advice regarding how SB 17 applies should be directed to the Office of General Counsel at 940.565.2717.
